I'm not suggesting that Blacks &; Whites are treated the same! Blacks are abused, mistreated, & killed, by the Police in much greater numbers, and frequently simply because they are black. My point in this article is the proposition that if you are unfortunate enough to be picked up on their radar you will soon find out what "police power" means. This story involves myself and my son.
In 1985 I bought a bar in an old neighbor that I grew up in. I put my 22 year old son in charge as I already had a full time job. Neither one of us had any experience in running a bar. We soon came under the police radar when a nephew running from the police ran into our crowded bar. The police wanted to run into the crowded bar & my son suggested that he"d bring him out if they would wait outside. All the police ran into the bar & all hell broke loose, arrests were made, etc. Thus began our nightmare with the police. Over the next several years the following things happened:
My son was arrested numerous times for resisting arrest, and failure to leave even though he lived on the property.
A patron arrested with my son mouthed off to the police while in handcuffs in the back of a paddy wagon and was beaten by the police and when they arrived at the jail he was thrown head first into the bars of the holding cell.
The police would walk into the bar unannounced with shot guns on their shoulders and parade around the bar that way & harassing patrons.
The city filed a complaint against the Bar with the Licquor Commission for alleged violations of the licquor laws. At a hearing held in another city of our state the Commission dismissed the complaint against the bar. The police were enraged and the following week they entered our bar & again arrested my son for resisting arrest and failure to disburse .
With our business destroyed we filed a law suit against the police, closed the bar, and both my son & I moved into the suburbs so there was little chance of crossing paths with this particular police force. Thank god we had the resources to move away.
